A couple of months ago The Shadow Conspiracy released their latest DVD “Into the Void” filmed and edited by Shadow team member Johnny Devlin. I went about contacting the guys who creep around in the Shadow’s if they’d be up for answering a few questions about the making of the video, not only did they come back with a yes but we managed to get Johnny to put together a short exclusive web edit just for streetphire! Wicked.

Name, Age, Where you from?
Johnny Devlin, 22, Deltona, FL
How many years you been riding?
Around 10.
How many years you been into filming?
I started messing around with filming and editing about seven year ago.
What equipment do you use camera setup and edit setup?
During the Shadow vid I filmed with a Sony VX2100 and used a Century fisheye and NRG Varalux light when they were necessary, and edited in Final Cut Pro 6 on a Mac Pro.
Have you any good stories about being in the UK filming with Owain and Ali at some of their secret spots? Was there any sketchy moments where you guys worried about your safety or getting bust by the police or did you meet any crazy people who’d lived in the tunnels for decades!
I actually don’t think we got hassled too much on that trip. Most of the ditches and tunnels we rode seemed to be in pretty secluded areas. I did almost step on a dead lamb in one of the tunnels though, it was real dark and hard to see where we were walking. So that was a bit startling.
What was you most favorite clip in the video, or maybes you can tell us what you most favorite location/spot was to film?
During our trip to Phoenix, AZ we climbed up a small mountain to watch the sun set, it was such a beautiful setting. I think that may have been one of my favorite spots while filming for the video.
Your the man behind the lens and the edit machine, did it feel odd at all having the last section in the video?
Yea a little bit. I didn’t make that decision though, that was up to Ronnie and the Shadow crew.
Musical direction of Into The Void is different from the norm, id say this is one of the things which appeals to me about it. (I know for sure Niki Croft loved it all) I heard some people who’d seen the video say they thought the music wrecked the video. Who’s choice was it behind the tune selection and what do you think about it?
I chose the music for the majority of the parts in the video with consent from each rider with the exception of Seth and Rickey, they chose their own songs and I couldn’t have been happier with their choices. I think most of the people that were directly affected by the choice of music were pretty happy with it and I think that’s what I was most concerned with. I’m glad Niki enjoyed it as well.
How long from the first clip to the day it went off to the duplicators would you say has been spent making it all come together? What was the break down: hours spent filming, editing, travelling?
That’s too much breaking down for me ha, but we were pretty consistent in our travels and filming from the summer of 07 until around the fall of 08.
You’ve left working at Shadow to move on to new things, what brought it on and can you tell us a little about what your new job entails? You enjoying it?
I suppose it was brought on by a simple call to love my sisters and brothers as myself. I don’t really have a new job, I’ve just been traveling and visiting different intentional communities, grassroots organizations, and individuals to share in their lives and work, and to learn how they are coming together to embody the changes they want to see and need in order to sustain a whole community or as Martin Luther King Jr put and understood so well “the beloved community”. I’ve been enjoying it very much.
We hope we see more from you in the edits and in front of the camera in the future, thanks for making this edit and for taking the time out to answer some questions for streetphire. Good luck in your travels and what you get up to, we hope to see more from you in the future!
Thank you
