New Products: Mutiny Cosmotron & Loosefer Frames
September 1st, 2008 Tom Kirkby
Mutiny are on the cusp of releasing two new signature frames from Mat Roe (the Cosmotron) and Randy Taylor (the Loosefer). I decided to catch up with Gaz over at Mutiny to find out more, including why Mat got a inbuilt seatpost on his, and why Randy’s comes in 20.666″.

Why did you decide to give Mat and Randy signature frames?
Have you seen them ride?!?!?! Both of these boys shred. We have been trying to give everyone on the team a chance at a frame. So this time it is Roey and Randy’s turn.
On the Cosmotron, it had an inbuilt seatpost, just like the Sunday Schwartz does. Did Sunday not patent the idea?
Macneil own the Patent to the Pivotal Technology not Sunday. I contacted Darcy over at Macneil and we worked it out so we could use Macneil’s idea on our frame. Maybe 18 months ago, when Roey and I first started talking about ideas for his frame he mentioned that he would like a built in Pivotal mount, I made some notes but then last year at Interbike when I saw Sunday had done it I was a little hesitant to do it, Roey wanted it, so we ran with it. Built in seat posts are not a new idea, anyone remember Steve Geal’s Zimma frame? Shit that’s like 15 years ago! T1 also did it a few years ago.
Have you received any negative press because of it?
Nope.

Anything else new on the Cosmotron?
Roey had a lot of ideas for his frame, so we finished everything up last December when he was over in Austin. First off he wanted a really short rear end, the last frame he had he had cut the dropout slots in a lot and had been running a 13.25″ rear end. He has also had shaped the drop outs down to real minimum shape. So for the frame you have a really short rear end with tiny dropouts. If your running it at 13.25 a peg will seat perfectly to the shape of the dropout. The frame comes with removable brake lugs, Roey at one point was taking his brakes on and off 2 times a day. So just in case he wants to put some anchors on he can. The frame has a very laid back seat post angle at 68 degrees, this is why the sizes are 21.2 and 20.8. The 21.2 will ride like a regular 21″ frame with a 71 seat tube angle and the 20.8 like a 20.6.
Just like Roey, this sucker is 420 baked.

Why is it called the Cosmotron?
Mathew is a cosmonaut , he just floats around in his bubble. We like giving our products funny names and Cosmotron was just too good not to use.

What’s the low down on Randys frame?
This kind of worked out very well, Mat and Randy had very similar ideas for the frames, so the frames have a similar look. The big differences are; Randy wanted a steeper head tube angle for Nose Wheelies so we went with a 75 degrees, the downtube and chain stays are round for a simpler look as per Mr. Taylors request, dropouts are a little bigger. I love the name and top tube size (20.666″). How did that come about?
I had a bit of Christmas get together, Randy shows up in full party mode! He made a break for my dry erase board and wrote the Loosefer, followed with some specs and a really crude frame drawing. The 20.666 size came a little later when we were developing his ideas. I just love that we went into production with Randy’s original drunk frame name idea.
When can we expect to see them in the UK? And when is the new clothing out?
All the new product should be landing around the world from the start of September
